The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy and Water (MoEW) and the North Lebanon Water Establishment (NLWE), has implemented a project on rehabilitating five water pumping stations, aiming for the improvement of water supply services in Akkar El-Atika, Tikrite, Biret Akkar, Akroum and Machta Hammoud municipalities.
On June 2, 2016, JICA organized an inauguration ceremony at Ain Taya Water Pumping Station in Akkar El-Atika municipality with MoEW and NLWE in the presence of representatives from the Embassy of Japan in Lebanon, Mr. Mahmoud Baroud, Director of Tutelage at MoEW, Mr. Wissam Kanj, Engineer at MoEW and Vice President of LEBA-JICA and Eng. Jamal Krayem, Director General of NLWE. At the ceremony, Senior Representative of JICA Syria Office delivered a speech addressing the importance of Japan’s support extended to the host communities in Lebanon and continued cooperation between the two countries.
As part of JICA's assistance to support the neighboring countries affected by the protracted crisis in Syria, the project aimed for providing improved watery supply services for communities hosting a large number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon. The project completed the replacement and installation of equipment in the five water pumping stations in March 2016, contributing to more sustainable and durable supply of water in the communities where about 45,000 Lebanese and registered Syrian refugees live together. JICA will continue to provide essential assistance to the neighboring countries of Syria to contribute to socio-economic stability of the region.
